2026 Alpine Cowboys Season Recap - Strong Finish Sends Alpine Back to the Playoffs

The 2026 Alpine Cowboys season was another competitive summer at Kokernot Field as Alpine battled through an inconsistent first half, put together several impressive winning stretches and finished the regular season 29-21. The Cowboys returned to the Pecos League playoffs, but their season ended against the Grand Junction Razorback Suckers with losses of 9-7 and 7-4. Although Alpine did not return to the championship level of its dominant 2024 season, the Cowboys once again played meaningful baseball through the final week of July.

The season began on May 26 with a dramatic 11-10 victory. Alpine then dropped consecutive games by scores of 11-9 and 7-4 before responding with a 12-4 win and a convincing 19-4 victory. The Cowboys closed May with a 10-5 loss, leaving the opening week as an early indication of what much of the 2026 season would look like. Alpine could be extremely dangerous offensively, but maintaining consistency would be the challenge.

June began with a difficult stretch. The Cowboys lost 5-4, 4-1 and 12-11 in three consecutive games before the offense exploded. Alpine scored 23 runs in a 23-11 victory, followed with a 26-9 win and then won another slugfest 25-16. In just three games, the Cowboys scored 74 runs and quickly erased the frustration of the three-game losing streak.

The ability to respond became one of the defining qualities of the 2026 Cowboys. Alpine followed those offensive explosions with a 2-1 victory and then a 9-1 win. The 2-1 result was particularly important because it demonstrated that the Cowboys did not have to score 20 runs to win. Alpine could survive a pitching battle just as easily as it could win a Pecos League shootout.

A narrow 5-4 loss followed, but Alpine responded with an 8-3 victory. The Cowboys then won 9-5 and followed with dominant victories of 17-4, 11-1 and 9-2. By the middle of June, Alpine had turned its difficult start into another strong run and was positioning itself as a serious postseason contender.

The Cowboys suffered a 6-0 loss on June 16 but again recovered quickly. Alpine went on the road and won 7-4 and 12-10 before adding an 11-5 victory. A 6-2 loss interrupted that streak, but the Cowboys responded with an 11-7 win.

Late June became another example of the season's up-and-down nature. Alpine lost 9-7, bounced back with a 16-5 victory and followed with an 8-4 win. The Cowboys then lost 6-4 and 13-9 to close the month. Alpine had spent June moving between dominant offensive performances and frustrating close losses, but the club remained firmly in the postseason race.

July began with one of the most difficult stretches of the season. Alpine lost 29-11 and 8-6 before winning a close 6-5 game. The Cowboys then dropped a 3-2 decision and lost a high-scoring 16-14 game. A 5-1 road victory stopped the slide, but Alpine followed with losses of 13-5 and 8-5.

The middle of July continued to test the Cowboys. Alpine lost 12-11 before responding with a 16-7 victory. The Cowboys then fell 19-12 but came back the following day with a wild 20-17 win. Those games reflected the character of the 2026 season. Alpine's offense remained capable of scoring with anyone, but many nights became battles that came down to which team could record the final outs.

As the final portion of the regular season arrived, the Cowboys began playing some of their best baseball. Alpine earned a 3-2 victory over the Trinidad Triggers on July 21 and followed with a dominant 17-4 victory over Trinidad the next night. Those two wins started an important late-season surge.

The Cowboys then turned their attention to the Pecos Bills and produced three of their most impressive offensive performances of the year. Alpine defeated Pecos 21-3 on July 23, followed with a 24-5 victory on July 24. On July 25, the Cowboys completed another overwhelming performance with an 18-1 victory.

Across those three victories over the Bills, Alpine outscored Pecos 63-9. It was one of the most dominant stretches of the entire 2026 season and came at exactly the right time, with the Cowboys fighting to secure their postseason position.

Pecos finally answered on July 26. The Bills defeated Alpine 7-6 in a close game, ending the Cowboys' late winning streak. Even with the loss, Alpine completed the regular season with 29 victories against 21 losses and earned another trip to the Pecos League playoffs.

The 29-21 record reflected the unusual nature of the season. Alpine was capable of enormous offensive performances, scoring 20 or more runs several times. The Cowboys won games 23-11, 26-9, 25-16, 21-3 and 24-5. At the same time, a large number of games were decided by one or two runs. Alpine won games 11-10, 2-1, 12-10, 6-5 and 3-2 while also losing close games by scores of 5-4, 12-11, 9-7, 6-4, 8-6, 3-2, 12-11 and 7-6.

Those close games made the difference between the 2026 Cowboys and some of Alpine's greatest teams. The 2024 championship club had consistently found ways to finish games and went 45-4 during the regular season. The 2026 Cowboys were much more vulnerable, and several games that could have gone either direction ended as narrow defeats.

Still, Alpine entered the postseason with reason for optimism. The Cowboys had just produced a strong late-July run, including consecutive victories over Trinidad followed by three blowout wins over Pecos. The offense was clearly capable of changing a game quickly, and Alpine had once again earned an opportunity to play postseason baseball.

The playoff opponent was the Grand Junction Razorback Suckers, who had established themselves as one of the strongest teams in the Mountain Division during their inaugural Pecos League season. Alpine and Grand Junction opened their postseason series on July 28.

Game 1 became a close offensive battle. Grand Junction defeated Alpine 9-7, putting the Cowboys one loss away from elimination. Alpine had spent much of the regular season surviving high-scoring games, but this time the Cowboys could not produce the final comeback.

The teams returned on July 29 with Alpine needing a victory to extend its season. Grand Junction again controlled the outcome and defeated the Cowboys 7-4. With the victory, the Razorback Suckers advanced and Alpine's 2026 season came to an end.

The two playoff losses were disappointing, particularly after Alpine's strong finish to the regular season. The Cowboys had entered the final week playing some of their best baseball, but Grand Junction won both postseason games and prevented Alpine from making a deeper run.

The 2026 season continued a remarkable stretch of consistency for the Alpine franchise. The Cowboys had won the Pecos League Championship in 2024, remained competitive in 2025 and returned to the playoffs again in 2026. Kokernot Field continued to be one of the league's most important venues, and Alpine again remained relevant in the Mountain Division through the end of July.

The season will be remembered for its enormous offensive performances. The Cowboys scored 23, 26 and 25 runs in consecutive games during June. They later scored 20 runs in a July victory and finished the regular season with three consecutive blowout wins over Pecos in which they scored 21, 24 and 18 runs.

The late-season series against the Bills was perhaps the clearest example of what the 2026 Cowboys could do when everything came together. Alpine won 21-3, 24-5 and 18-1 on consecutive nights, scoring 63 runs while allowing only nine. Few teams in the Pecos League could match Alpine when its offense reached that level.

The challenge was sustaining that level of play. The same Cowboys team that could win 24-5 could also find itself on the wrong side of a one-run game the following night. Alpine lost nine regular-season games by two runs or fewer, and those narrow defeats prevented the Cowboys from producing the kind of dominant record that had defined some previous Alpine seasons.

Even so, a 29-21 regular season and another playoff appearance represented another winning chapter in Alpine Cowboys history. The organization remained competitive, the offense produced some of the highest-scoring games of the summer and Alpine entered the final days of July with an opportunity to make another postseason run.

That run ended against Grand Junction. The Razorback Suckers defeated Alpine 9-7 in the playoff opener and 7-4 in Game 2 to advance. For the Cowboys, the final result was disappointing, but the season again demonstrated the resilience that has characterized Alpine baseball throughout the Pecos League era.

The 2026 Alpine Cowboys finished the regular season 29-21, returned to the Pecos League playoffs and ended the summer with another season of meaningful baseball at Kokernot Field. The championship trophy did not return to Alpine in 2026, but the Cowboys remained one of the Mountain Division's postseason teams and continued the long tradition of competitive professional baseball in Alpine, Texas.
