LAS VEGAS � Alpine is still having trouble getting on track offensively as it starts its first northern road trip, falling 9-3 to Las Vegas for the second loss in a row.
Just exactly what is happening is uncertain as neither coach returned calls for comment, but two three-run Train Robber innings seemed to be the difference, along with a pair of crucial Cowboy errors.
Alpine went up 1-0 in the first when Tyler Rost walked, advanced on a Logan Lotti single and a walk then came home on an error.
Vegas matched that sum in the bottom of the stanza when A.J. Alexander singled, stole second and came home on a Randy Wells single, then made it 2-1 in the second on an Andrew Lopez home run.
The Cowboys tied it in the third on a Lotto walk and Joel Carranza double but that was as close as it would be as the Robbers had their first three-run inning.
Hitting off starter Bryce Weidman, Wells, Adam Kam and Dillon Usiak each hit two-out singles. Ted LeMasters and Andrew Lopez walked and Usiak came in on an error.
Both teams again had even scoring in the fifth when Lotti and Carranza both doubled for Alpine, and Train Robber LeMaster singled, stole second and third and came home on a John Hotta single.
The game was still within striking range for the Cowboys at 6-3, but Vegas relievers Eddie Medina and Anthony kept them scoreless through the final stanzas, while the Robbers added three more in the sixth off relievers Mike Castrignano and Jeremy Burright.
Alexander singled to open the inning, stealing second and scoring on a Walsh single. After Walsh advanced on an error, Wells walked off Burright and Walsh scored on the second out of the inning. Wells came home on a putout, wild pitch and stolen base.
Derek Martinez got the win for the Robbers, giving up three runs, two earned, on five hits and three walks in five full. Weidman got the loss.
The Pecos League schedule shows the teams will play again beginning at 6 p.m. Monday.
