RHP Edwards the PTBNL in Venable trade

News Image
Aug 22 2015 12:00AM

San Diego Union Tribune
Rangers right-hander Jon Edwards is the player to be named later going to the Padres in the Will Venable trade, a source confirmed.

The Padres sent Venable, an impending free agent, to the Rangers on Tuesday in exchange for minor league catcher Marcus Greene Jr. and a PTBNL.

Edwards has yet to be officially identified because he is currently on revocable trade waivers and must pass through before he can be traded. If he is claimed by another club, the Rangers would pull him back and, in all likelihood, complete the trade with the Padres after the season.

Edwards, 27, is a converted pitcher who was originally drafted in 2006 as an outfielder (14th round, Cardinals). He was released after the 2010 season, played for a brief time in the independent Pecos League and signed a minor league deal with the Rangers in 2011, whereupon he began the transition from the outfield to the mound.

The first Pecos League alum to reach the majors, Edwards debuted last season, posting a 4.32 ERA in 8 1/3 innings for the Rangers. This year, he"s made 11 big-league appearances, with a 6.00 ERA in six innings.

Edwards is with Triple-A Round Rock in the Pacific Coast League, where he has a 1.42 ERA and 20 saves. He"s walked eight and struck out 44 over 31 2/3 innings.

Armed with a mid-90s fastball and a slider he is still learning to harness, the 6-foot-5 former position player could develop into an interesting middle-relief option.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram first reported Edwards as the PTBNL in the deal.
